3 Ways To Fight Off Germs In Your Office

Hand Hygiene Heroes Break Chains

Not all heroes wear capes, but they do wash their hands thoroughly and frequently.

As our medical professional heroes go about the business of providing care and saving lives, it is of the utmost importance that they (and everyone else) practice excellent hand hygiene.

They do so because when a person coughs or sneezes, germs are projected into the air and eventually fall and stick to any surface within 3 to 6 feet. If a person touches a germy surface, like a desk, doorknob, cup, or pen, and then touch their eyes, nose, or mouth, they can become infected. Hand hygiene heroes know how to break the chain of infection.

We learn from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) that, “Hand hygiene is a way of cleaning your hands that substantially reduces potential pathogens (harmful microorganisms) on the hands. Hand hygiene is considered a primary measure for reducing the risk of transmitting infection among patients and health care personnel. Hand hygiene procedures include the use of alcohol-based hand rubs and hand washing with soap and water.”1

Washing thoroughly and frequently reduces the number of bacteria and viruses being passed around. As such, hand hygiene has been identified as the best first defense against germs, bacteria, and viruses. The process is simple:

1. Using alcohol-based hand rub:

  • Dispense the recommended amount of product
  • Apply product to the palm of one hand
  • Rub hands together, making sure that all surfaces of hands and fingers are covered until they are dry

2. Hand washing with soap and water:

  • Wet hands first with water
  • Apply soap to hands
  • Rub hands vigorously for at least 15 seconds, covering all surfaces of hands and fingers
  • Rinse hands with water and dry thoroughly with a paper towel
  • Use a paper towel to turn off the water faucet

3. Comprehensive Approach

Most healthcare facilities take a holistic approach to safeguarding environments. However, the approach must also be flexible and customizable because of unique situations. MasVida Health Care understands the importance of hand hygiene acceptance. As the exclusive agent of the Altra Hand Hygiene Program, MasVida Health provides products that people want to use in a reliable dispensing system. The program also offers customizable education, awareness, and behavioral modification tools to help those in healthcare maximize hand hygiene practices in their facilities. These tools include wall charts, posters, placards, and signs.

Medical professionals care for so many people with various ailments in confined spaces throughout their day. According to the World Health Organization, “Hand hygiene is the simplest, most effective way to reduce the chance of catching these infections. Though cleaning hands is easy, healthcare workers might forget or be too busy to do this.”2 Germs are passed from person to person through physical contact but can also reside for hours on surfaces. High-touch areas filled with illnesses create a very unsafe environment and puts people at risk for healthcare-associated infections (HAI’s). Therefore, hand hygiene becomes the first line of defense in infection prevention (IP) and optimizes any further steps taken in healthcare facilities.
